In the speech presented today at the 2019 AIPAC Policy Conference, PM Viorica Dăncilă announced that after the "full consensus" analysis is completed, Romania will move Israel's Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
"I am pleased to announce today to the AIPAC audience that after the conclusion of the analysis by all the constitutional actors involved in the decision-making process in my country and in full consensus, I as Prime Minister of Romania and the Government I lead will move the Romanian embassy in Jerusalem, the capital of Israel, "Dăncilă said.
The move of Tel Aviv's embassy to Jerusalem is a matter of dispute between President Klaus Werner Iohannis and the Government of the Social Democratic Party (PSD).
The announcement was made by PSD leader Liviu Dragnea, a friend of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
"The government has adopted a memorandum that decides to begin the procedures for the effective relocation of the Tel Aviv Embassy to Jerusalem. It may seem a little important. This gesture has a huge symbolic value, first of all a symbolic value for a state that has a tremendous influence in the world, a state, Israel, with which we have special relationships for many years, a state in which there are over 500,000 Romanians, is of great value to the US administration. We are basically the second country to do this. The move of the Embassy to Jerusalem can and will, I believe, will bring some short- and medium- and long-term benefits for Romania. We have to use this huge chance, "said Liviu Dragnea. Liviu Dragnea and PM Dancila made more visits to Israel and held talks with Netanyahu.
The President Klaus Iohannis opposes this goal. No one knows what is the cause of the President's opposition.
Maybe the President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, is influenced by Angela Merkel, he being a novel of German origin.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Teodor Melescanu announced on several occasions that Romania is the last hundred meters in the move of Tel Aviv Embassy to Jerusalem.
